Shetland Broadband offers a wide range of internet services which meet the demands of a home user on a tight budget through to high speed connections via radio, which can equal or out perform leased lines.

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is available in most standard types. ADSL provides increased speed over dial-up with the advantages of being 'always on' and allowing some other services (phone, fax etc.) on the same line to be used simultaneously.

Shetland Islands Council is planning a 3 year pilot project to establish the viability of using wireless technology to deliver high speed broadband to Shetland communities. The two areas that have been earmarked for the project are Vidlin and Fetlar.

Shetland Broadband is developing a wireless delivered internet service which at the moment offers coverage to an expanding area of Lerwick, Scalloway and Gulberwick. The main advantage of this system is that it is comparable with the new SDSL service which is currently limited to a few exchanges in the UK. SDL offers data transfer at the full subscribed rate in both directions unlike ADSL. Also larger bandwidth and less contention services are available than with ADSL. These services are more economical than the leased line alternative.

A subscription free dial-up service is available through Shetland Broadband's sister business, Shetland Internet. This service offers a pay as you go dial-up connection via a 0845 number which is charged at local call rates (contact your telephone provider for charges), membership is FREE. There is not even a requirement to register to use the service.

Shetland Broadband will be expanding their Shetland Wide Area Network (SWAN) and this will include such services as radio hot spots, direct data linking between client's premises without the expense of a leased line, VLANS, VOIP, server hosting and coverage for temporary events etc.

A domain registration and management service is available for most domain types. Existing domains can also be transferred to Shetland Broadband for management.
