Wireless Internet

Shetland Broadband is developing a wireless SDL internet service which at the moment offers coverage to areas of Lerwick, Scalloway and Gulberwick. The main advantage of this SDL system is that it is comparable with the new SDSL service which is currently limited to a few exchanges in the UK. SDL offers data transfer at the full subscribed rate in both directions unlike ADSL. Also larger bandwidth and lower contention ratio services are available than with ADSL. These services are more economical than the leased line alternative.

This means that using a 50:1 contended service you can be sharing the allocated bandwidth with up to 49 other users at the same time. Shetland Broadband's wireless service offers contention ratios of 50:1, 10:1, 5:1 and 1:1 (exclusive use).
